Welcome to my blog. I am an eleventh generation Appalachian and former fifth generation coal miner turned justice activist. What began as seeking labor rights in today’s coal industry became an awakening into the world of environmental justice issues in my community. It’s been a long road since leaving the industry. I moved my family away from the mountains I once loved, spent six years studying environmental communication and sociology, traveled the nation connecting with others about environmental and social justice issues, all while doing my best to raise my kids and create a better, healthier future for generations to come. As I wrote, studied, and traveled I struggled to better understand myself and my Appalachian home. I realized many unfortunate truths about environmental activism and those within our communities caught within the grasp of powerful economic forces.
Throughout the journey, I’ve made many friends and many enemies. I’ve made mistakes and learned from them. While I do not contribute regularly to this blog, I still come back to it from time to time in search of truth and perhaps a bit of clarity.
I encourage you to reach back to explore this blog in its entirety, to witness my journey, and engage in the fight for justice wherever you may be. All we have is each other and this one amazing beautiful planet.
